The Bhilai Steel Plant or BSP was conceived under the aegis of Indo-USSR Treaty signed in New Delhi on 2nd of March 1955. The Bhilai integrated steel and iron plant was commissioned with an initial production capacity of 1 million tonnes of ingot steel.
The main reason for establishing the plant at Bhilai was its suitable location and proximity to the captive mines of the plant located at Dalli-Rajahara (90 Km) which supplies iron ore and the dolomite and lime stone used is available from HIRRI (41 Km) and Nandini (22 Km) captive mines respectively. The first blast furnace of the plant was inaugurated on 4th of February 1959 by Dr. Rajendra Prasad the then president of India. To live upto the demands of the growing economy the capacity of the plant was enhanced in successive phases to 2.5 and 4.0 million tonnes in the year 1967 and 1988 respectively using the latest technology in steel casting and shaping of those times.
